Adopt A Student

Quick Summary:

The Adopt a Student Program is a collaborative effort between Hope for Africa and our partners Alliance Africa and FINIDP designed to connect individual sponsors in the US with students in Uganda.  For a little over a dollar a day, an individual or a group can pay for a student’s schooling for a year. Among other things, this includes tuition, uniform, textbooks, and a mosquito net. As college students, we understand the value of education, and we know that the best way we can help the inhabitants of sub-Saharan Africa rise out of poverty is to provide them with a solid and consistent education.

More Information:

Thank you for your interest in sponsoring a student in Uganda through the Adopt a Student Program (ASP). Your compassion can make a huge difference. One of the many difficulties that exists for young people in Sub-Saharan Africa today is the lack of access to affordable education. Inexpensive and adequate public education are nearly non-existent in the areas in which we are involved, and the majority of schools are run privately and at times strictly for profit. While some families are able to cover the tuition fees of up to $400 a year per student, both youth who have lost a parent and families with many children face major difficulty in gaining access to an education.

The establishment of this program has been made possible through a collaborative effort with the Friends In Need Integrated Development Project (FINIDP.org), our non-government partner organization in Uganda, and Alliance Africa (allianceafrica.org), our non-profit partner based in Memphis, Tennessee. With several goals in mind, ASP was initiated by members of Hope for Africa at the University of Mississippi in September of 2008. At this time ten students were enrolled in primary and secondary schools for one academic year. Our vision for the Adopt a Student Program is to reach out to young people in the Mukono district of Uganda in order to ensure both access to a consistent education and a brighter future.

In order for these students to maintain enrolled in school, this program depends on your support. We believe that education plays a key role in long-term sustainability not only for the student but also for developing nations as a whole. Without an educated citizenry, long-term progress in any country is severely inhibited. Because of your compassion, a student’s life can be changed through access to an education and Uganda as a whole can take one step further up the development ladder.
